Information for Faculty and Departments

The Provost has primary responsibility for matters related to faculty, including academic promotion and tenure decisions.  He or she delegates some of these responsibilities to the Associate Provost for Faculty.  

The Provost is also responsible for communicating with the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, regarding all academic matters--a responsibility that includes coordinating the submission of several annual governance reports related to faculty.

Faculty Development Programs

• NewFaculty@UIOWA Programs: Listing of workshops and resources, including the New Faculty Newsletter, to support early career faculty members.
• DEO/Academic Administrator Programs: Information about the Office of the Provost's annual series of workshops for departmental executive officers.
• General Faculty Programs: Workshops and resources designed to support all faculty members throughout their career.
• Faculty Development Awards and Fellowships - Information about UI faculty development awards and fellowships (Career Development Awards, Faculty and Global Scholar Awards, Old Gold Summer Fellowships, etc.), including instructions and links for applying and reporting.
• Fellowships in the Office of the Provost - The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost invites any interested tenured or clinical faculty members of The University of Iowa to apply for two available fellowships, beginning in January 2009.

Faculty Organizations

• Emeritus Faculty Council - The Emeritus Faculty Council is the executive committee of the Association of Emeritus Faculty of The University of Iowa, and serves as an advisory body to the University administration.
• Faculty Senate - The Faculty Senate serves as the principal channel of communication between rank and file faculty members and the central administration of the University. 

Faculty-Related Policies, Procedures, Guidelines

• Administrative Surveys and Questionnaires: Implementing Guidelines - Instructions for faculty or departments wishing to conduct administrative surveys. 
• Annual Reviews of Probationary Clinical Track Faculty - See the "Evaluation Process" section of the Faculty Appointments and other HR Information pages.
• Criteria for Institutional Enhancements and Reductions - The "Criteria for Institutional Enhancements and Reductions" delineates a set of principles for identifying academic priorities, including program quality, centrality, and potential for excellence.  These are the principles that the University and its colleges, departments, other academic units, and nonacademic units should follow as they seek to invest resources strategically.
• Faculty Appointments and other HR Information - A reference site for departments, to facilitate the processing of faculty "personnel events" from searches through retirement.
• Policies and Procedures, Faculty-Related - A listing of selected policies related to faculty and academic issues, including tenure track and clinical track promotion and tenure guidelines.
• Reporting Requirements for Departments - A list of departmental responsibility for reporting to the Office of the Provost about various faculty activities. 
• Reporting Requirements for Individual Faculty - A list of individual faculty responsibility for reporting to the Office of the Provost about various activities.

• Constitution Day - Every September, the UI celebrates Constitution Day with a series of events.  Visit this web site to learn about those events, and to learn more about the U.S. Constitution. 
• Faculty Handbook - Online handbook of policies, procedures, and regulations that apply to faculty appointments at The University of Iowa, as well as additional information about the University and its campus and surroundings that may be of use or interest to faculty.  Many of these same pages can be found in the University of Iowa Operations Manual, the Code of Student Life, relevant portions of the Policy Manual of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and the Code of Iowa.
• Data and Reports - The Office of the Provost collects, analyzes, and reports to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, and other internal and external constituencies on a wide range of institutional data, having to do with financial matters, faculty appointments, faculty activities, enrollment management, peer comparisons, etc.  Find links to selected data and reports on this page.
• Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professorships Program - A program that brings distinguished visitors to campus to enhance learning possibilities for UI faculty and students.
• Outcomes Assessment Information and Resources - A page of web-based resources to offer assistance as departments with undergraduate majors create and maintain plans to assess student learning outcomes.
