Reminder: all UI-owned laptops and tablets must be encrypted by Dec. 31

The Dec. 31 deadline for encrypting all university-owned laptops, tablets, and external storage devices is quickly approaching. Campus IT staff have been working hard on this project, and over 80% of portable devices are now encrypted. However, everyone’s cooperation is needed to achieve 100% compliance by the end of the calendar year, as required by the Board of Regents.

If faculty or staff in your college or unit still need to get their devices encrypted, please urge them to work with your local IT support person/team to ensure that we meet this requirement. The process is quick and painless, and encryption protects data if the device is lost or stolen. Your IT support has reports available, should you have questions about your unit’s encryption status.

It’s key to have IT support staff assist so that data can be recovered in the event of a device malfunction or forgotten password. Faculty and staff should not turn on encryption manually.

If you encounter challenges or resistance, please contact Chief Information Security Officer Jane Drews, or Associate Vice President and CIO Steve Fleagle. For questions or concerns on encryption, contact your local IT support staff, or the Information Security & Policy Office (it-security@uiowa.edu or 335-6332). For more details, visit the mobile encryption webpage.
