RE: Revision of UI's Nondiscrimination Statement, Anti-Harassment Policy, and Policy on Violence

The University of Iowa has updated its Nondiscrimination Statement, Anti-Harassment Policy, and Policy on Violence effective May 18, 2015 to align with the protections afforded by the university's Policy on Human Rights. The specific changes include:

  1. adding "religion, pregnancy, genetic information, and service in the U.S. military" as protected categories under UI policies;
  2. changing the phrasing from "veteran status" to "status as a U.S. veteran"; and
  3. changing the order of the listed protections to be consistent with the university's Policy on Human Rights.

The university's Nondiscrimination Statement must be included in all departmental publications such as brochures, pamphlets, manuals, guidebooks, and websites describing or inviting participation in programs at the University of Iowa. This is required by federal regulations to make clear the university's commitment to equal opportunity in employment and equal access to its programs and activities.

With the widespread use of desktop publishing, it is important for departments to be aware of this requirement and to include the Nondiscrimination Statement in publications not printed by Printing Services, University Communications and Marketing, or UIHC Marketing and Communications. The Nondiscrimination Statement should be updated on all websites as soon as possible, whereas printed publications may be updated at the time of the next scheduled printing. Please use the updated text of the Nondiscrimination Statement:

The University of Iowa prohibits discrimination in employment, educational programs, and activities on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, pregnancy, disability, genetic information, status as a U.S. veteran, service in the U.S. military, sexual orientation, gender identity, associational preferences, or any other classification that deprives the person of  consideration as an individual. The university also affirms its commitment to providing equal opportunities and equal access to  university facilities. For additional information on nondiscrimination policies, contact the Director, Office of Equal Opportunity and  Diversity, the University of Iowa, 202 Jessup Hall, Iowa City, IA, 52242-1316, 319-335-0705 (voice), 319-335-0697 (TDD), diversity@uiowa.edu.

There is no requirement to include the Nondiscrimination Statement on departmental homepages. A link to the Nondiscrimination Statement is located on the university's homepage, and the statement and two policies can be found in the university's Operations Manual at:

Policy on Violence: http://www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/ii/10.htm

The university's EEO Tagline will be updated accordingly on Jobs@UIOWA and EOD's website. The HR Unit Representatives/Contacts will be informed once those changes are finalized.
