The University of Iowa

We Are Phil

Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

Each spring, we celebrate "Phil's Day," an event that helps raise awareness and appreciation of the power of private support (PHILanthropy).  Starting today and continuing through November 1, we are launching a new program to celebrate and encourage philanthropy among our own faculty and staff: "We Are Phil."

All it takes is a walk around campus to quickly see the positive impact of philanthropy.  Hundreds of scholarship funds are enabling undergraduate and graduate students to pursue their dreams.  Advancements in teaching and research are being supported through named faculty positions, faculty support funds, and research funds.  And many of our university's world-class facilities--including our incredible hospital, clinics, and medical labs--have been funded in part by gifts from some of the UI's generous alumni and friends.

"We Are Phil" is our new annual call to action to broaden Phil's impact and encourage more UI faculty and staff to give to support any area of the university--because at the UI, WE are Phil.  Philanthropy touches every part of the University of Iowa experience, and each of us has the opportunity to make an even bigger impact in advancing the UI's excellence in teaching, research, and service.

I encourage you to learn more about "We Are Phil" on the program's website (, read a message from the program's co-chairs (Dr. Matthew Howard, Neurosurgery; Professor Jerry Schnoor, Engineering; and Joni Troester, Human Resources), get answers to frequently-asked questions, and see video stories of UI employees who have made a difference by giving back.

Thank you for all you do to support the University of Iowa.
