The University of Iowa

We Are Phil

Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

Last fall, the University of Iowa launched We Are Phil, an annual initiative to encourage faculty and staff to be philanthropic (to "be Phil") toward the UI by supporting causes on campus that matter to them.

The first year of the We Are Phil faculty/staff giving program was an outstanding success.  More than 3,000 of you made gifts to support the UI last year, providing more than $4.4 million in support for everything from student scholarships and social justice to health care, libraries, the arts, and Hawkeye Athletics.

Since the day I arrived on the UI campus 30 years ago, I have been impressed with the generosity and community-mindedness demonstrated by UI faculty and staff.  This new program gives us a chance to highlight and strengthen this important part of our campus culture.  I am distinctly proud that the initiative was so successful in year one.

Next week, October 13-17, marks the second annual We Are Phil participation drive.  All over campus, faculty and staff volunteers are encouraging colleagues to make their annual contributions.  Whether you make a gift once a year or once a paycheck, I hope you will join me in giving back to the UI.

Thank you for all you do to support the University of Iowa--the University FOR Iowa--and each other.

P. Barry Butler
Executive Vice President and Provost
